And listen, if you don't know Pouya, I'm confused because

[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And then we'll like we'll move to like nicer things later. So anyway, let's chat Simuliu. OK, so Simuliu was on the Canadian version of Shark Tank, which is called Dragon's Den.

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think Pouya, you said you already saw the video. But yeah, folks maybe has seen the online clips of, you know, what what we're about to talk about.

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_01]: But in case folks don't know what like Shark Tank, Dragon's Den is, it's where a bunch of rich entrepreneurs will like hear pitches from people from companies, entrepreneurs, whatever.

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_01]: And then they will they will hopefully negotiate a deal to invest.

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: And Simuliu was like, I think one of the guest judges.

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_01]: And and I'm not 100 percent on that. But either way, he was not judge, sorry, entrepreneur.

[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_01]: He's on and and it gets crazy because on this latest episode.

[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So I think this happened last week where these entrepreneurs of this company called Boba with two B's show up and you're like, OK, cool, whatever.

[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_01]: And these two, they're seeking a one million investment in exchange for 18 percent.

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's like normal. They'll come in with, you know, their offer for their company.

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_01]: And they say this is a ready to drink Boba bubble tea.

[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And this is where it gets it goes off the rails pretty quickly because they start by saying that trendy sugary drink that you queue up for and you never quite sure about its content.

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_01]: What is the reason? Why?

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Why? And of course, Simu immediately interjects and is like, no, actually, we know exactly what's in it.

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's like we've done we we look at what we're putting into our bodies here.

[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_05]: We kind of know maybe the first time you visit, you're like, I don't know what this is.

[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Sure. After that, you'll be in the know.

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. And have you had Boba? Are you are you a Boba person?

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, I have. And I enjoy it dearly.

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't have it often, but I have tried it and enjoyed it.

[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I am not a Boba person.

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_01]: But my husband and my mom like obsessed with Boba.

[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And when my mom comes to visit me, she has like a very specific Boba order order from a very specific place here in the Bay Area.

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's just it's it's a phenomenon. OK, but and for folks that don't know, Simu Liu is like Chinese Canadian.

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_01]: OK, and Boba was originated in Taiwan and it's been around for like 60 years.

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_01]: OK, so it's again, not some like trendy thing that just showed up, maybe for these folks.

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And of course, Simu like says that.

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And and it's again, it's known that it's like tea, milk, brown sugar, tapioca starch and water.

[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what it is. And then, of course, it'll that's a standard.

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, you like can change up your order as necessary.

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_01]: But that's standard.

[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So then they start with how their company Boba with two bees has transformed this beloved beverage into a convenient, healthier, ready to drink experience.

[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And they're ready to quote unquote disturb the Boba market with high quality tea, fruit juice and famous popping Boba.

[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, that's the thing. That's where it all kind of goes sideways.

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes.

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Is not that you're interested in this space.

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_05]: It's that you're insinuating that, you know, other other brands, other Boba is mysterious ingredients, unhealthy in a way to market your own as like the true number one, which anyone can see as like, OK, that seems like you're putting others down to lift yourself up.

[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_05]: And others are going to be people who actually know what the product is and have been doing it for years.

[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_05]: So like I understand.

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Obviously, I understand, like from a marketing perspective, when you're in this situation and you're pitching a product, you're trying to like stand out.

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_05]: But you should also understand that it's with the specific choice you've made to be in this market, to be, you know, launching this product, that it will come off culturally insensitive.

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. And again, I think there's a way to be like, hey, we really enjoy Boba, but we wanted to add our own twist on it.

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Right. I think there's a way to say that because it's funny because they're their sales speak for themselves.

[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_01]: They're like in the millions, the sales and their profit for year.

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I think one was like six hundred thousand and then they were on track to make like millions in million, at least in profit.

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_01]: So, again, it's selling. That's not the issue.

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_01]: It's just the way they came at it.

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_01]: And fun fact, obviously, the two entrepreneurs that we're talking are not Asian and aren't Taiwanese.

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_01]: They look white Canadian to me.

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I believe they were a company based in Quebec.

[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_05]: And yeah, it just it came off relatively tone deaf of like not not recognizing that.

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, we're again, we're marketing this like Boba is boring and not really what it's what you think it is.

[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_05]: We're going to make it better.

[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_05]: We're going to take what has been made and we're going to make it the real thing.

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_05]: And to me, as a Middle Eastern man, I thought of many different situations where it's like, oh, we made, you know, this is like chocolate hummus.

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my God. Why was I about to say that? I'm not.

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I remember when we first heard of chocolate.

[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_05]: I was like, what are we doing here?

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_05]: It was like, just let hummus be hummus.

[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Why is it chocolate now? Why is it a dessert?

[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like they can be two different things and that's totally OK.

[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_01]: But there's like this weird colonization of Asian anything.

[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Right. And I raged on this podcast about like yoga, about all these things.

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_01]: It's just sometimes when something feels quote unquote new from the East.

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_01]: If it almost is like, oh, capitalism and we got to take over.

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Just just resist the urge. OK, how about that?

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Again, to me, it's like capitalism and, you know, something new comes in or there's a new market and you're trying to get in on it.

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, cool. But don't strip the identity away or lessen the identity of where it came from to give it a new spin and imply that it is now good.

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_05]: It wasn't good. Now we're good.

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, us, we you know, again, we white people made it good.

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_01]: That's the issue. And of course, Simu very particularly says, hey, I'm concerned about this idea of disrupting, disturbing bubble tea, whatever, because that's something very near.

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_01]: And then immediately. And this is where our villain number two, three comes in is is a shark is a sorry.

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I keep calling her shark, but she's a dragon.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Minhas is her last name anyway.

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_01]: So she comes in and she's like, hmm, I'm not sure.

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_01]: And of course, fun fact, everyone, she's Indian.

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Indian or South Asian, at least.

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Wow, Sasha. Wow.

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Tell us. Tell us about this shark.

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is why I'm getting pissed off.

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, so Minhas is her name.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: So, yes. OK, she's she's Indian.

[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_01]: She's like, not everything needs to be traditional, blah, blah, blah.

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Then Simu just quickly being like, OK, then what about cultural appropriation?

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Because like Pouya, you were saying, right, you're taking something distinctly Asian

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Right. Blah, blah, blah.

[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And the other dragons are now coming in and be like, whoa, you're going in a little hard.

[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_01]: And and it's crazy because the whole thing is the entrepreneurs kept saying it's not an

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_01]: We took the Asian version and made it with fruit and juice.

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, I think that is the the crux of what Simu was trying to say.

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_05]: It's not like you are not allowed to do this this bad.

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_05]: I feel like we live in a very globalized and that might not be the word world now where,

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_05]: you know, I'm actively taking in so many different cultures.

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm learning about so many.

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm trying so much, so many different foods.

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_05]: We are allowed to like foods from different cultures and we are allowed to try and

[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_05]: learn from that culture or adapt to that culture.

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Of course, the only issue here was that I felt like it was the marketing of the identity swap

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_05]: being a good thing and being the this is going to change the game because we are making it

[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_05]: better.

[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_05]: And it's like you don't you could have lit.

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_05]: And I and I he definitely made this clear in his like responses that he doesn't think

[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_05]: they're coming from a place of like malicious decisions.

[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_05]: No, but he's like the way you said it.

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Not good.

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Fix the way you said it.

[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_01]: And again, it's just it's very unfortunate because I don't think anyone on that panel

[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's by this company literally called popping.

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love this.

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, it's just they're going back and forth, back and forth.

[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_01]: And she ends up giving them the one million dollars.

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Which I believe she's backed out of now.

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_01]: So obviously this goes viral.

[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Dragons then like post Simu Liu's freaking thing, like a statement from him.

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Like you were saying, basically just, you know, kind of being like, oh, it's never OK to harass people.

[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Blah, blah, blah.

[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, the entrepreneurs, whatever.

[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_01]: It's Simu's words.

[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_01]: They never once apologized for making it seem like, you know, oh, Simu is being a jerk.

[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_01]: And like he cut off entrepreneur.

[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's what the video title was.

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Like dragon cuts off entrepreneurs pitch.

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Which I feel like it's definitely, I don't, I've never watched a full episode of Shark Tank or Dragons then like that.

[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_05]: But I've watched compilations and shorts before.

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_05]: And more often than not, it's, it's, they usually frame it as a, the investor shuts down the shark or makes them regret their decision.

[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_05]: It's usually a, it's a versus type mentality of they want it to look like a heads up battle.

[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_05]: And clearly the marketing for this was, wow, look at Simu just shutting this person down.

[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_05]: And not so much, let's look at it from a different lens.

[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_05]: I also think it just, it became a more complicated issue than it needed to be, I think.

[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_05]: And a lot of it had to do with the fact that there were the dragons were not seeing eye to eye on this one.

[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_05]: And because I mean, listen, I just said this.

[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_05]: I lived in Canada for 10 years.

[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_05]: When I tell you I've, I love a poutine.

[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Poutine is one of my favorite, favorite guilty pleasures.

[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_05]: I've also had a shore chicken shawarma poutine from a shawarma spot that does authentic shawarmas.

[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_05]: But they also do a poutine that's got like chicken shawarma in it.

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_05]: I enjoy it.

[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I've had, there was an Indian place I would order from Sasha.

[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_05]: They also had their own poutine.

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_05]: And I don't think anyone's looking at that like, wow, they said F you to every other poutine.

[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_05]: It gets pronounced the exact same.

[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Just one extra letter on it.

[00:17:12] [SPEAKER_05]: And obviously, you know, you think about brands like Coca-Cola or Coke, where if you just say
