[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, this week I was scrolling my timeline and I've never heard of this movie.

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_00]: However, I just saw people dragging Colleen Hoover and I'm actually familiar with her as an author.

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I have never read her works because I just don't read that kind of literature.

[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Because I'm literate, but I know that this woman has sold more books than God.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_00]: The she legit has sold all the books, so it's so fascinating to me to now see that it looks like although she has bazillions of defenders and readers.

[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_00]: She also has at least a thousand of the track.

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, what fast did it made everybody turn on Colleen Hoover?

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, so okay, I'm going to give a little bit of background on Colleen Hoover.

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_02]: So Colleen Hoover initially, she started writing and she writes in

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Not a young adult like teenagers, but like early adult novels.

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_02]: So they're like meant for people that are just over the age of 18 like just for hanging out of YA and her initial books she had to self publish.

[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Nobody wanted to publish them. Nobody wanted her.

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_02]: And then one of her self published books blew up on TikTok.

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she got publishing deals and became this like huge writer that we all have heard her name.

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I have also never read a Colleen Hoover book because I once saw a thread of tweets that were like excerpts from her books and every single one of them was heinous to the point that I was like, I will never read that if Colleen Hoover has one hater it is me.

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Like if she has no hater I'm dead. I and I need to say like if people like Colleen Hoover, that's your progative.

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I think reading anything is probably better than reading nothing.

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_02]: But to me when I was describing how I feel about Colleen Hoover to my boyfriend, I said that it says if Colleen Hoover is Drake and I am Kendrick Lamar was how I describe it.

[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_02]: It's okay. Before we get into the movie itself, just a little bit of the info on why she's problematic.

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_02]: So she writes erotic novels that are meant for like early adults.

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_02]: But she also like several of the novels including it ends with us include domestic violence.

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_02]: And so a big criticism of her is that she romanticizes domestic violence over emphasizes the importance of like forgiving your abuser that kind of thing.

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_02]: As well, there's allegations that her son might have sexually assaulted somebody.

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_02]: And when this information, this is alleged as far as I know. I don't think everyone to court. I could be wrong on that.

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_02]: But when it's like brought up to her, she's either like no he didn't do that or he's like paid his debt to society.

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Like she's very back and forth like it's not it's weird. So people are mad about that.

[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_02]: There was also supposed to be in it ends with us coloring book.

[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I want to. I'm sorry. And erotic YA coloring book.

[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_02]: What's not why it's like one step above. Do you know what I mean? Like it's meant for people that are adults, but like haven't been adults for long.

[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_02]: So young adults. So young adult, but like team books get labeled as young adult in the bookstores.

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, so you see the confusion?

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's a problem. They need to name those team books. And grow that people. It's not read of damn books.

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_00]: If the books are about 17 year old love and you are 19 stop read those books. We have the books for you.

[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I to me. I don't think it's there's anything wrong with adults reading books for like a lower reading level unless they include like graphic depictions of relationships

[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm sorry. Right. It's not really about the intimacy.

[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Anything that is like weirds in me. I read a novel recently that was written for adults.

[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And it just had a lot of flashbacks throughout the main characters lives.

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And so for like a lot of the love story of the book, they were teenagers. And I was like, I don't like this.

[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I am uncomfortable with this. So to me that's where the line is.

[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_02]: But obviously, I don't get to draw everybody's lines but anyways.

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So there was supposed to be a coloring book of this book as well.

[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_02]: And Colleen Hoover got a ton of backlash and it was like, this was an ill-advised idea.

[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_02]: We're not doing it. So you know what?

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Good for her and that one.

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, I think we got a point out. They're calling Hoover like I said it.

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_00]: This lady has sold bazillion books. You know, like it is her popularity.

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I just feel like we're under selling it.

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I was looking at her with a PDF and there's a New York Times quote in it.

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_00]: To say she's currently the best selling novelist. This is from 2022.

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_00]: So to say she's the best selling novelist in the United States to even compare her to other successful authors.

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_00]: But of landed several books on the best of this fails to capture the size and loyalty of her audience.

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_00]: This lady is incredibly popular with the book that I think is a best.

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they go up and then you they buy the book. You know what I'm saying?

[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and the other thing too is a lot of people who maybe had stopped reading after school or like hadn't been able to read for fun in a long time.

[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Find her books as an accessible point to get back into reading, which like I think it's a good when people read.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's good. Maybe that's a hot take but I also think you need to push past maybe this one.

[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_02]: But I also made her first and foremost.

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, she felt there's an excerpt that's like about the couple in the in the book.

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know which book it is. They have like a child and she's like thanks for the baby and he's like, oh, the babies beautiful. That's all you and she's like, yeah, except for the babies giant balls.

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And he goes, yeah, the baby does have giant balls and we laughed and laughed about our sons giant ball. This about an infant.

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_00]: She read a book about me. That was okay.

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_00]: So calling who the hell dare you tell my business like this is your book.

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, it is odd to glorify the size of your baby's genitalia calling what are you doing? We don't want to hear about babies balls.

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Now, okay, do you know what the book it ends with us is about?

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, no clue. All I knew was that there was a sequel coming to call it starts with us and that's it.

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I'm I'm going to give a little breakdown of what it ends with us is about we're going to go through not the full plots and offices because that's long but just like the main points.

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And so I guess if you want to read this book or watch this movie and you don't want to get spoiled, you should skip ahead because I'm I'm going to fully spoil the book.

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_02]: So basically the main character of this is a woman named Lily Bloom who owns a flower shop.

[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And and what you need to know about her is that she's a child of a father who abused her mother and she resents both parents because he abused her mom and because she didn't tell.

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Now, do you know what actor plays your father in the movie? Say, Matt, we're plays Owen Hunt on Grey's Anatomy.

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay, Colleen. That's so nice. I'm done.

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Look, whatever she said, whatever I say is she did she did this. She's Colleen, how dare you?

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a bad relationship. It's it's an abusive relationship. It starts with like.

[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_02]: She laughs when he accidentally drops something and then he like pushes her before frantically apologizing but.

[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just like an escalation of events over and over throughout the book. She is gets pregnant.

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_02]: They get married.

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_02]: He at one point pushes her down the stairs because she has a friend who's a man.

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_00]: I can see Owen Hunt doing all of this actually, okay.

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, no, Owen Hunt plays her dad who's dead.

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Like the actual.

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Who plays Ryle is Justin.

[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Valdonny play and he was in.

[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_02]: What was I going to say? Well, is that so called.

[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Jen, right here.

[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_02]: And so basically like the majority of this story, a lot of it is like the lead man who's named by the way as Ryle.

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_02]: And he thinks that she is having an affair with her friend Atlas who is man.

[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And she, she gets abused a lot and in the end they're broken up.

[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_02]: And so she's saying, oh, I've ended the cycle of abuse by because it the cycle ends with us.

[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_02]: But in the epilogue.

[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_02]: She's co-parenting with Ryle and she never like reports him to anyone because she thinks that her child deserves to have a relationship with their father, even though their father is like a domestic abuser, which is obviously not like the right message to be given to young adults.

[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so she's not having normalizing abuse in one of her biggest novels, it seems that's now a movie.

[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And I think this is our first one that ever got like really, really big. This novel one, the 2016 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Real Man.

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, this is not a romance not like it's just if you want to tell me this is like a psychological thriller or something like that.

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, okay, yeah, I can at least understand where you're coming from but to portray it as a romance is a problem to me personally.

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_02]: And then the sequel to this book, it starts with us, I think, is that she starts dating that Atlas guy and then it's like, oh, but if Ryle finds out he's going to be so mad like this is like the one man that if I date, it'll be upset about and I don't know again.

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Never read it, never will read it. Sasha has read it ends with us we talked about it today and she was like there's no warning

[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_02]: for what happens and how bad it is and that it was really, really traumatic to read.

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_00]: So I would like to purchase the coloring book.

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, it doesn't exist. It was my picture.

[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Because all I'm here is that there's some graphic the picture of this for children to fill in the blanks I connect the dots on and I just need her arrested and I need to evidence but she didn't make the coloring book.

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_00]: That's she did that she ate that one thing by not doing it.

[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what the coloring book was supposed to be like was it going to all just be flowers at the flower shop?

[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. I genuinely don't understand what it was this this review said you know the coloring book was going to you know depict I guess it says it's like develop with Lily strengthen mine.

[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_02]: And so okay one last thing before we get into what this movie drama is that everyone's talking about this movie was slated to be released the week before Valentine's day this year.

[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_02]: But got delayed to the summer so thank God they delayed it.

[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_02]: You imagine because people don't know what this movie is about they think it's a like a romance and I know when the first trailer came out it was actually wow this definitely does portray some abuse like this is really intense.

[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_02]: And people were shocked, but can you imagine going to the movies on like a Valentine's date.

[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And then it's this.

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_00]: What are people doing that for 50 shades of gray in a little abusing to isn't it.

[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a white fan fiction and absolutely does have abuse in the plug in I've never seen those movies but I did read those books and they were.

[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah so that's the thing but you draw the line at the fan fiction it gets it gets to real for that but I'm telling you first it's a problem I don't have anything against fan fiction I just like.

[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_02]: It's certainly problematic but in 50 shades there's like oh I mean I don't know about the movies but in the books there is like over sexual assault that happens and so I just was kind of like done with it at that point, but I don't know ever had to draw the line somewhere for themselves.

[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah this is real love but you know like I just have to look over look all the crap the crap way we saw on the on the roll to real love like that's not that's not for me so I'm happy that this is this is going completely over my head.

[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_00]: But it was it's very funny seeing like you know the raging sides of this battle you know because although I see people are very verbally upset and as they should be vocally upset about this colleague who related in this book and all the books that she has like this.

[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay so we saw pictures of them but not the cast together the cast was not all together that will cast was there but they were not all together Justin Poldoni only appeared on the red carpet solo and with his wife and friends and fans.

[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_02]: And he was not with any of his co-stars not like lively nothing as well Justin Poldoni did not well allegedly allegedly allegedly he did not introduce the film ahead of the screening with like lively and calling Hoover even though he's a director star of the film and an executive producer just like lively and calling Hoover announcing the movie at the start so that you know got.

[01:10:19] [SPEAKER_00]: and told way. Way, way, way, cause they, of course it has got to be a limit. So they couldn't get to you.

[01:10:26] [SPEAKER_00]: So they went through the best for they both loves his man. It's why you go through all of his just to reveal this woman's business.

[01:10:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this is a lot of steps for something like largely if I'm not involved in something. I actually just stay out out of it.

[01:10:49] [SPEAKER_02]: And so the the groom goes and talks to the guy from that work event and it turns out that he had been told

[01:11:03] [SPEAKER_02]: which was a good excuse for why he could never come over. Yeah. I mean, is it?

[01:11:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. So this other guy thought that he was in a committed relationship and was planning to

[01:11:19] [SPEAKER_02]: introduce her to his parents over Christmas. The guy she was cheating with. But yes, we're going to

[01:11:28] [SPEAKER_00]: call it. He vibes. That's what was what to say. Oh, what should you catch? She just be cheated a little bit.

[01:11:34] [SPEAKER_00]: She just be cheated a little bit. But she's obviously desirable, you know, make you want to put a ring on it.

[01:11:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, God. Okay. And so now we have a list of five things that our messenger's brother has found out since all this happened.

[01:11:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Number one, she told other people that she did not love him anymore because he had gained weight. That's

[01:11:55] [SPEAKER_00]: so messed up. To to feel that way is already messed up, but to tell people is despicable.

[01:12:04] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's not slow. Yeah. Like people can feel how they want to feel. I mean, you can't control

[01:12:11] [SPEAKER_00]: how you just say, you know, if you have a feeling like that, I don't think you chose to feel that

[01:12:14] [SPEAKER_00]: there, you just have like your own biases that have already like predisposed you to to be like this.

[01:12:19] [SPEAKER_00]: You were already going to act like that and that's something that you should have worked out well

[01:12:22] [SPEAKER_00]: before you became a functioning adult in society. But because you didn't, you're supposed to

[01:12:28] [SPEAKER_00]: bury those feelings. You know, you're not supposed to talk about them. It's like at a point if you

[01:12:33] [SPEAKER_02]: have an intrusive thought and you realize, oh, that is a bad thought to have. I'm going to actively

[01:12:39] [SPEAKER_02]: work with like, cognitive and behavioral therapy to gaslight myself and to not doing that and

[01:12:44] [SPEAKER_00]: even to not do it. Exactly. But fourth, myself to believe that I don't have an issue with this because

[01:12:49] [SPEAKER_00]: now you look like a off-wheuman. I look in fidelity, I can accept. But this is she's part of you

[01:12:56] [SPEAKER_02]: following absolutely not exactly. I can't excuse cheating, but I understand the other people can.

[01:13:03] [SPEAKER_00]: So I we don't have to talk about it. No, no, please don't keep on me. But if other people get cheated

[01:13:08] [SPEAKER_02]: on, I like to hear both sides. Oh my god. At one point, she told her fiance that she was going

[01:13:13] [SPEAKER_02]: a girls trip, which was actually going on vacation with the other guy. Okay. That's typical.

[01:13:18] [SPEAKER_02]: When he told her that the wedding was off give me the ring back. She called him dramatic.

[01:13:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Technically speaking if you call the wedding off the other person gets to keep the ring. Just

[01:13:28] [SPEAKER_00]: uh, hmm. See, I didn't agree with that. No, that's cool. That's really cool. It's

[01:13:33] [SPEAKER_02]: a lot of stuff. Yes to give it back if he called it off, she gets to keep it in solid.

[01:13:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I think actually you know what that's fair. If I buy the ring and I give it to you, it's your gift.

[01:13:43] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you decide, you don't want the gift. The marriage no more. You give back the promise of

[01:13:47] [SPEAKER_00]: the marriage, the gift. You give that back. But I give you the what the ring. What's that given to

[01:13:52] [SPEAKER_00]: you? I can't just be like, no, I don't want you to have it no more. Give it back to me because I'm

[01:13:55] [SPEAKER_00]: going to go marry somebody else to be with somebody else. So it does make sense. It's a lot to

[01:13:58] [SPEAKER_00]: get sound. Uh, I'm just feel like if you turned out somebody's wedding proposal give the ring back.

[01:14:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't understand and maybe somebody will tell me, but I don't understand why you would even

[01:14:08] [SPEAKER_02]: want to keep it, you know? Well, yeah. I think it's because other things too is like in theory.

[01:14:13] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like what you can sell it, but it's not like in general engagement rings hold a lot of value.

[01:14:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Like there really only is expensive as they are because of sentimental value. Like they're so

[01:14:24] [SPEAKER_02]: overvalued in general. Yeah. But she called him dramatic for calling off the wedding after he

[01:14:32] [SPEAKER_00]: found out she cheated on him. She like it's just a little cheating damn. I know you was going to take

[01:14:37] [SPEAKER_02]: everything so seriously you straight. Well, not like some people can work through stuff like that

[01:14:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and some people can't. And it's like I like I if someone wants to work through cheating after

[01:14:51] [SPEAKER_02]: they've been cheated on that's their progative to do. But like if someone doesn't want to,

[01:14:56] [SPEAKER_02]: it's coming at them kind of crazy to say, wow, you're dramatic. Well, she's in full gas light mode

[01:15:03] [SPEAKER_00]: to this point. You know, when you're back as it gets to wall and you're seeing that everything

[01:15:06] [SPEAKER_00]: that you worked so hard to keep in maintain your lives and stuff like that are starting to catch

[01:15:10] [SPEAKER_00]: up with you. It's on point you have to start throwing everything at the water see what sticks.

[01:15:16] [SPEAKER_00]: And that like you're dramatic she's trying to discount his feelings and make him feel like no this

[01:15:20] [SPEAKER_00]: isn't that big of a deal. It's just a little cheating it's fine. Like why would you ruin this

[01:15:24] [SPEAKER_00]: expensive wedding and this whole thing that we got planned and like up with our whole life for a simple

[01:15:29] [SPEAKER_00]: mistake even though this is no mistake. She's been doing this for a long time and she just wants

[01:15:33] [SPEAKER_00]: to believe this. So yeah, it's a wild thing to do but I feel like this is in the playbook.

[01:15:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. So after the wedding got called off she went to one single therapy session and tried

[01:15:43] [SPEAKER_02]: to convince him that they should get back together because she had been diagnosed as bipolar and

[01:15:48] [SPEAKER_02]: an additional diagnosis. And so in her words, it wasn't really her fault.

[01:15:55] [SPEAKER_00]: This is the Amelia's tumor of it all, you know?

[01:16:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Did she love her when they're not cursed in? Who could love all one come on? It was a tumor baby.

[01:16:06] [SPEAKER_02]: It was always. Honestly, Teddy should get checked out maybe.

[01:16:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay and then the fifth thing that he found out so he kept in contact with her for a few more

[01:16:21] [SPEAKER_02]: months trying to get closure and they even wanted a couple's counseling at her insistence

[01:16:25] [SPEAKER_02]: but the only explanation she would ever give was that she didn't think he would find out.

[01:16:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And she also admitted that she had no intention of ending either a relationship if she also hadn't

[01:16:36] [SPEAKER_02]: been caught. Not the best way to work it out I don't think.

[01:16:40] [SPEAKER_00]: But he still went to couples therapy. Meaning he was whipped, you know, and I just thought it's like

[01:16:47] [SPEAKER_00]: not. Yeah, that's what I think that's why she thought that like you're being dramatic was going to work

[01:16:51] [SPEAKER_00]: because she knew that she had a rapid run. I think that that's why the co-workers went out of

[01:16:57] [SPEAKER_00]: their way to tell them because they could see that he was just like, you know, he was so far up

[01:17:01] [SPEAKER_00]: up her ass. Like he just worshiped the ground that she walked on which is great for somebody.

[01:17:05] [SPEAKER_00]: If they also are giving you that energy back, but instead I hear cheating on you, you know,

[01:17:10] [SPEAKER_00]: it makes it for any like human that remotely cares about other humans to want to step in at that

[01:17:15] [SPEAKER_00]: and say, hey, you're doing a lot a lot for this lady. And she is not reciprocating those same

[01:17:21] [SPEAKER_00]: actions for you. Maybe stand up. This was a stand-up call. That's a stand-up call. So there's definitely

[01:17:27] [SPEAKER_02]: more mess but our messenger doesn't remember all of it. But they do leave us with the craziest

[01:17:31] [SPEAKER_02]: thing they witnessed, which was the bride's parents were turning the ring and wedding dresses

[01:17:38] [SPEAKER_02]: to our messenger's brother so that he could sell them and to apologizing for raising the kind of

[01:17:43] [SPEAKER_00]: person who could do something like this. Um, I did this as hard for me because again,

[01:17:53] [SPEAKER_00]: I just expect more loyalty from my friends and family. Of course, didn't my co-workers,

[01:17:57] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a co-workers. So if I build some dirt like this, I don't expect my mom to be like,

[01:18:02] [SPEAKER_00]: all right, I have to apologize all my sons and half ma'am. Do a month's eye. If I cheated

[01:18:07] [SPEAKER_00]: it, I just didn't want to get caught. I thought if nothing else, recommend me for getting caught,
